Update: According to Pete Candland’s office, Long Park restrooms will be open for the weekend, though the water is not potable.
Long Park’s Gainesville neighborhood library and restroom facilities were closed early today after officials discovered E.coli contamination. E.coli can induce nasty stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, bloody diarrhea and more.
“The integrity of the Long Park water system has been in question for some time,” said Gainesville District supervisor Pete Candland, in a letter to constituents. “There is now an urgent need to upgrade the current water system in the park. This water system upgrade is urgently needed, and we need to act now.”
Despite assurances that county workers had brought in temporary toilets, it’s likely too little, too late to properly accommodate the needs of hundreds of families due to arrive at the park this weekend to kick off the fall soccer season.
So be sure to go before you leave the house — and bring hand sanitizer. You can also email the Board of Supervisors: bocs@pwc.gov to let them know how much you appreciate hot, plastic portable potties. The next board meeting is on Tuesday, September 16, at 2:00 pm.
